Food is LOVE
My grandmother was the head baker at The Golden Lamb for many years. Some of her recipes are still served there today. This pie is one of the recipes she passed to our family. For years, I thought what I had inherited was a recipe. As I've gotten older, I've realized that's only part of the story.
Recipes tell you what to do. They rarely teach you the way.
My grandmother could roll a biscuit in her hands with a motion so effortless it seemed ordinary. We all watched. None of us have ever been able to reproduce it. The recipe survived. The movement didn't.
This pie reminds me that the most valuable things we inherit aren't always written down. They're carried in hands, habits, and quiet moments that disappear before anyone realizes they should have been preserved.
Every time I make this pie, I'm reminded that memory isn't only something we keep. Sometimes it's something we practice.
Established in 1803, the Golden Lamb is Ohio’s oldest continually operating business and historic hotel.
